    Peter: thanks for these comments. I think the distinction you make is important. As part of challenging the (mis)uses of heritablity, dynamic systems challenges the concept of a trait as a fixed thing. Even height changes over time, even in adulthood and we think of it as a fixed trait. It is highly stable, but the stability is maintained by assembled systems. So to think about genes and traits we always have to think about life cycles and environmental contexts.
